Getting Started With iOS 5 - iMessage

I, being a software development company's employee, friends and acquaintances expect a lot of things from me ranging from solving small gadget problems to even software developing. Now that iOS 5 is already available, everyone expects that I will have enough knowledge about it's functions and yeah I do. Today I will be posting about iMessage and how to use this feature.

iMessage feature for iPhone is launched by Apple's as a way of bringing a platform to rival RIM's BlackBerry Messenger. Below is provided information about the iMessage feature.

Turning On iMessage

To turn iMessage on your device and also to adjust setting for the same, you will have to to go to “Settings” and then to “Messages” on your device. Tap or or slide over to turn iMessage on if if the switch button is shown off.

Once iMessage is turned on, you will be shown an activating dialog and this will be followed by some additional options. The additional options are given below.

  1. Send Read Receipts
Turning on this option will let the other party in the conversation see the moment you view a message they have sent you. If left off, the other party will be able to see only when the message has been delivered.
  2. Send As SMS
If this option is turned on, iOS will route a message through your carried through SMS whenever iMessage is unavailable.
  3. Receive At
This option will allow you to add receiving email address or phone numbers where you will receive messages sent via iMessage.

To set up an email address for iMessage. Tap on the third option given above and then enter your Apple ID. This will be followed by the email address you would like to use to receive iMessage. The email address will then be verified and added to iMessage.

In order to set the address of your outgoing iMessage, which will appear as the sender to the other party, tap on the caller ID of your choice. It is suggested that you should set the same caller ID across all your iOS devices in case you would like to keep all iMessage conversation in sync.

Once you start using this feature, you will come to know a lot of things. You will be able to see that the other party is typing a response and that your message is delivered or not.

This is all for the day, you may come back for more later or you can visit Oglacs' Facebook page for information about web application development, iPhone apps development and other software development related topics.
