All of us nowadays use
the computer, we connect to the internet, interact on Facebook, tweet
on Twitter and lots more. But how is that possible? All these are
possible because of the Local Area Network otherwise known as LAN.
What is LAN?
A LAN can easily be
described as an interconnection of computers connected by
communication lines within a particular area. It can also be
expounded as a group of computers and other systems located close to
one another, connected by communication links in order to share other
assets like printers, storage devices, etc. In a more complex
language Local Area Network can also be defined as a network of
computers that are connected by a particularized type of transmission
media and network interface cards and are controlled network
operating systems that support every necessary communication
protocols and standards.
This is one thing through
which everything of today that make use of the internet work on. It
is indeed a problem solver. It is talked about in any field whether
it is within a software development company or a school. It is used to allow communication,
sharing information and collaboration between different users.
However, the Local Area Network is generally used in a small area as
for instance, the building or an office complex of any android application development or a web application development company. It
came to the rescue when some or all of the employees or department
need printers or scanners. A printer or scanner connected via a LAN
can be accessed by all whose computers are connected via LAN and on
top of that no company would be able to afford buying separate
printers and scanners for all employees.
At one point of time
computers in an office shared the same hard disk. It is known as the
disk server and it is the first example of resource-sharing. Few PC
users were allowed to access a common hard disk through it. The first
disk server used the operating system CP/M and it is the fore-runner
to DOS. The later is now the most popular operating system. A
software is also used in it which divided the hard disk into separate
volumes and these volumes acted like private hard disk drive for
specified users and at the same time this software too creates a
single public volume that can be accessed by all users. Not even the
worst software development company of all now uses the old system of
disk server but a heightened one. One may now have heard about Cloud
